Tongji University

Tongji University is the leading universities directly under the authority of Ministry of Education in China, included in the state-funded Project 211, the 21st Century Education Rejuvenation Action Plan of China. The history of the university dates back to 1907 when German doctor Erich Paulun established Tongji German Medical School; in 1923 officially named as university; in 1927 as national university which was a world famous comprehensive university with science, engineering, medicine, arts and law. In 1952, after the discipline restructure, Tongji became the largest and most complete engineering university in Chinese civil engineering field. In 1978, with the Reform and Opening approved by the State, Tongji quickly developed to be one multi-disciplinary university with the engineering orientation. Today, experienced more than 100-year history, Tongji has grown into a comprehensive research university with ten major disciplines, namely sciences, engineering, medicine, literature, arts, law, economics, management, philosophy and pedagogy.

Tongji endeavors in the internationalization, cooperating with educational, technological and economic fields of Germany, France, UK, USA, Japan, Canada, Italy, Spain and Finland, etc. Approved by Chinese and German governments, Sino-German College for Graduate Study and Sino-German College of Applied Sciences are established in Tongji; approved by Chinese and Italian governments, Sino-Italian Campus established. There are jointly established colleges such as Sino-French Institute of Engineering and Management cooperated with Paris Tech in France, Tongji-UNEP Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development cooperated with UNEP as well as Tongji-Australian Institute of Technology and many other international programs.

Tongji makes great effort in the development of International students’ education. In 2011, total registered international students amounts to 4862, and the long-term international students among which the degree students are about 50%.

Industrialized Discipline Chain:

In Tongji, there are 29 colleges/schools with 74 undergraduate programs, 263 academic Master programs, 144 Doctoral programs and 19 Post doctoral research centers. Mobile stations. Modern Manufacturing, supported by the National Engineering Center for Clean Energy Vehicle, synergizing Automobile, Rail Traffic, Traffic Engineering, Software Engineering, Management, Material Science, IT and Mechanical Engineering in Jiading campus, which is close to Shanghai international automobile city.

Educational Features and Goals:

In recent years, Tongji University has been exploring and gradually forming the modern concept on education and school running with Tongji Characteristics. It has been decided that the undergraduate education should be the foundation of the university whereas the graduate education be a way to strengthen the university. Now the university has established the comprehensive quality-oriented education pattern and talent training model that emphasize the integration of “knowledge, ability and personality”.

Social Service and Internationalization:

The university sticks to the harmonious development of the four functions of the university, i.e. “talents fostering, scientific research, social service and international communication”. It keeps strengthening its function of serving the society so as to realize the centralization of the university functions. In line with the national development strategy of science and technology and the major demand of the regional economy, Tongji is promoting traditional disciplines to a new level, strengthening the new disciplines, concentrating and simplifying the cross disciplines, and working closely with the industries, so as to form discipline chains and discipline groups that promote the interaction and common progress of the strong disciplines and the weak disciplines, and to build up the discipline system of a comprehensive university.
